Digital art needs digital spaces: With wwwforum, the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf opens a virtual space that offers artists and visitors a field of experimentation and explores the possibilities of digital exhibiting. The three-dimensional landscape is a shared space for artistic creation and events, exhibitions and digital experiments. Artist studio Christian Mio Loclair designed the virtual space and is kicking it off with the exhibition Come out and dance.

Starting in Juli 2023, we will award three virtual residencies for one month each to artists working with virtual reality and other digital art forms. The artists are invited to experiment in the virtual environment, actively shape it, and create new digital artworks. Each residency gives time and space for artistic research, exhibiting the results and a final event at wwwforum.

At the beginning there will be a technical onboarding with the platform JourneeX, previous knowledge in working with Unreal 5 is basically an advantage. A production budget of 1,000 € will be paid for each residency. To apply, please submit a short text and visuals about your own artistic work as well as questions and ideas to be explored during the virtual residency.

The selection of the artists for the virtual residencies will be made jointly by the NRW-Forum, Studio Christian Mio Loclair and the community after the Open Call is closed.

  • Duration: one month (from June 2023)
  • Focus: digital art, virtual reality, 3D motion, video
  • Previous knowledge (an advantage): UNREAL 5
  • Production budget: 1000€
  • Application: short text and first visuals and ideas for the planned exhibition at wwwforum, possible events/performances, research questions for residency.

Curatorial statement

As a jury, we felt honored to be able to consider over 30 exciting submissions that were submitted to the Open Call and to choose between so many strong and innovative concepts. In the selection process, it was important to us to cover a range of experimental approaches to wwwforum as a three-dimensional virtual landscape and to enable an encounter between the site, the art and the visitors.

Virtual Residency #1 | Daniel Nehring - When it rains, no drains! | 1.7.-1.8.23
In his concept, Daniel Nehring plays with different dimensions and materialities; the artist's drawings can be experienced spatially and form an independent place that visitors can explore.

Virtual Residency #2 | Franziska Ostermann - spacial poems | 15.8.-15.9.23
In spacial poems, both the written word and the carrier materials through which writing was historically handed down become three-dimensional objects in virtual space. Visitors can encounter them, move them, and thus change their meaning.

Virtual Residency #3 | Dorijan Šiško - Structural Visions from Critical Hit | 1.10.-1.11.23
Dorijan Šiško becomes an archaeologist of his own artistic work, populating the virtual landscape with figures and entities inspired by virtual tribalism and speculative design.
