My submission Walks on Canvas covers 3 paintings:
Laayoune, 300 x 70 cm, oil on canvas, 2019
Suzdal, 310 x 76 cm, oil on linen, 2010
Egyptian Squall, oil and acrylic on canvas, 240 x 48 cm, 2007
These 3 paintings compress a space of several miles into a single image to convey the cumulative experience of a walk. This allows for a distinct simultaneity, which unlike Cubist faceting or Deconstructivist simplification aims at an implosion of detail and material into a single albeit contorted perspective. With this method every house in a town can be painted, the route of a storm can be traced, the eye can follow the life of a city down seven roads in a rearranged simultaneism. This is a map of memory, as when many remember a place they do not recall each step, the location becomes a blizzard of details. I was attempting an intensified objectivity, but those whose perspectives are too often ignored could develop such imploded imagery to represent their experiences.
