“UNEARTHLY FLOWERS”
A DIGITAL ARCHIVE OF BOTANY
Expanding between Art and Science Research, “Unearthly Flowers” is a project combining 3D scanning with Augmented Reality (AR).
A variety of flowers from around the world, were 3D scanned, printed and brought to life with AR. The result resembles a botanical archive. Artist Malte Kebbel was inspired by the books of naturalist Ernst Haeckel, that include hundreds of illustrations of plants and flowers. These complex, curious biological “formations” are gorged with fine, colourful details. Once the 3D-scanning process completed and the scans rendered, the flowers mutate to adopt novel, unique shapes and colours. They almost look unearthly, supernatural, unnatural?
Kebbel is currently developing a digital version of a botanical archive, classifying a wide range of flower species. Each print of a flower can be enhanced by scanning a QR code. The flowers come to life and can be viewed in 3D.
