Short statement:
My sculptures present a concept of the human — a transformative system with connections,
overlaps and entanglements linking the body to the outside world. Through the lens of new
materialism, systemic theories and my personal observations I put forward the idea that the human skin is not a border but an interface to the outside world.
I explore how new scientific insights, as well as social, economic and climate changes confuse the modern binary logic between human/object, animate/inanimate, nature/culture. In a time of shifting realities, I wonder how this actuates a process of alienation from the concept of the human and our personal bodily perception.
My works are made from everyday materials and objects like shoes, compressors and latex, along with devices found in public transport and/or medicine. Removed from their original contexts and combined together these items create a complex network of associations and circulating contexts. They are alienated from their intended function(s) creating a new species of anonymous entities.
The Warmth of a Seat, 2018
Lifting cushion, compressor, concrete cast, arduino
The warmth of a seat is an installation with a concrete cast from an upper leg and a lifting cushion which is normally in use in ambulances. The compressor is controlled by an Arduino chip. Throughout the exhibition the cushion is getting slowly inflated and deflated, so that the leg cast is getting moved up and sinking down.
The title of this work ‘The warmth of a Seat’ is an example for Duchamp’s term ‘Infrathin’. This term describes something between two states of being. For example between the human and the object, like the warmth of a seat (which has just/been left).
