In January 2022, a herd of pigs was having fun in and around a mud pool. It took place behind the windows of four canal houses in the center of Amsterdam (see the videolink). Just like in my earlier video installation 'When The Cows Come Home' (2018), in which a herd of cows walked behind the same windows through a Dutch polder landscape, I wanted to bring farm animals back to the city.
Those pigs live on an organic pig farm where they are given all the space they need, both literally and mentally. Due to the relatively favorable conditions, social interaction between the animals is possible. The modern city dweller has lost the bond with the animals he eats, the way in which they are kept is not important to him. Trying to restore that bond is a precondition for a change in consumer behaviour. If you insist on eating meat (which I don't do myself), then at least eat the meat of these animals that have lived a good life.
