‘Customers who bought this item also bought…’ ads are ubiquitous online. These, like other more invisible algorithms that are used on the likes of Tik Tok, are more and more determining the things we like, what we believe is truth and even who we are. We question the online acceptance of this phenomenon by taking them out of their context, and imagining a dystopian (or utopian) future in which even in your day to day life, an invisible hand is shaping your decision making.
For us, this work feels particularly relevant for the open call as it takes the online world we have become so accepting of, and placed it in the natural environment, blending the synthetic and organic, ‘civilisation’ and nature. In doing so provoking questions we should be asking of ourselves as we, as a species, continue to move at light speed into the future.
