8.5” x 11” Book – 500 Pages
In the book Relapse NYC, photographic observations in New York City Sub- way are presented as dissected slides and fragmented visuals. The images are layered, sampled and distorted by artistic interventions. Condensed to form a sculptural block of monochrome, the piece analyses chaos through repeating occurrences, revealing hidden patterns that define social and environmental ten- dencies, systems and anthropological structures of the city.
The piece is created through a nonlinear mass of black and white xerox-style photographs shot on a cell phone over 4 years. The medium chosen is a demon- stration of a democratic process available to everyone – a copy machine, scotch tape, and a cellphone.
Handprinted and bound in materials chosen from disposed waste or local hard- ware providers, the form comments on the artist’s response to the city, romantic yet highly aggressive and unempathetic. The prints are bound by metal rings, a tethering mechanism that is cyclical & constant, questioning not only the entry and exit point of the reader but redefining the experience as always abstract yet repeating endlessly like a machine.
The book will be compressed down under a press to realize its final form, a torn mass that inherits the weight of the images and reveals its emotional distortions through destruction.
