Migration is a series of fantastical portraits, that I painted after moving from India to Germany. The portraits represent the material shift from one habitat to another as well as a temporal one, as a transition in the person depicted. Slightly autobiographical, the pictures show women transitioning as part of a harmonious whole, blending in with the foliage of the changing gardens.
Our perception situates us within our surroundings and at the same time requires to be an outsider. The gardens, figuring as a particular habitat in space and time, is a place of retreat and reassurance in which we are rooted; an inescapable condition of our understanding and ideas with which we confront new, unfamiliar environments. And as we grow, we branch out and fuse with new territory, we drift back to the comfort our primary perceptual gardens, finding inspiration.
The work is attentive to the intricacies of these characteristic transformations and overplays it through flora and fabric. There is strong underlying two-dimensional design and a flat aerial perspective that intends to distort the background realism, essentially to enhance it in the foreground.

About the Artist:
Latika Nehra (Indian, b. 1991), lives and works in Berlin, creates paintings and works in ceramic that often draw on the autobiographical. Each work is highly introspective, combines various themes, stylistically drawing from old masters while addressing modern motives.
