This video documents an interactive cartographic experience. Like my previous work, I explored my physical, experiential & technical understanding of my surroundings. Given my poor navigability, I photographed areas where I would lose my way, specifically on Santa Cruz Island. I extracted the embedded geo-coordinates in these images & drew these sites of lostness. The coordinates were converted into markers & the sketches were placed into info-windows, viewable by the hover of a mouse. I sketched Santa Cruz & overlaid it onto the island’s coordinates. By hacking Maps’ APIs & integrating sketches, I introduced first-person narrative to the objective platform. This reminisced on childhood hand-drawn maps & times that predate colonialism, the web & satellite intervention. I included a poem that conveys American fascination with “losing” & “finding” oneself with the condition of control. Satellite information feeds this hunger for universal knowledge & power as extended conquest of land.
