Alessio Mazzaro, sound piece, 2019.
The audio piece results from material collected during my first staying in Sao Paulo in 2019, where I interviewed students of Architecture from Faap and Escola da Cidade, but also people I met around. I asked them to share how they picture the future of the city, also physically, and what they want for it. My two research questions were “what would you like to change of Sao Paulo?” and “how do you picture Sao Paulo in the future?”
The sound piece investigates on one side dreams and utopias about Sao Paulo, and on the other, the agency of the citizens and chaos theories, in a mix between journalistic enquiry, anthropological research and dreams, visions outside of the ordinary. The power to imagine and go beyond, between utopia and concrete local needs. I call this Imaginary Urbanism: to give the citizens the possibility to dream and propose scenarios that prompt never thought solutions and perceptions of a city.
The montage of the interviews maps these imaginative scenarios for the city, but also hopes and fears from its citizens. The piece uses both English and Portuguese. Usually in my practice I collaborate with communities and groups I do not belong to, ending up learning new languages to make our communication more effective.
