When we enter into an unfamiliar space, our senses heighten and perception sharpens. In this new environment our body responds differently, engaged with different sounds, colours and spatial forms. We are the foreigner, and ours is the foreign body.
I would like to enter this new digital environment created by Christian Mio Loclair and create one of my self portraits based on what I experience there, to be exhibited within the space. It would be a continuation of a series of ongoing virtual self-portraits began in 2020. The portraits are a combination of photogrammatry, 3D modeling and animation. They were created using a variety of 3D software packages including Unreal Engine, Cinema 4D, ZBrush and Substance Painter.
With ‘Foreign Body’ I would like to explore the idea of virtual integration. The piece could allude to the idea of migration and nationalisation. I have lived in three countries in total – US, UK and now Estonia. Each time I move I experience a shift of identity and perception based on the environment. Surely if we were to spend a large amount of time in a digital environment, that would begin to shape us as well.
There is an invasive physicality to having another artist enter your world.
Ultimately I am a stranger here. How do I fit in? And do I choose to ?
