Flatlines (flat-lines.com) is an ongoing series where I actively play with the post digital aspect of our everyday life. I use the term post digital instead of post internet because post internet’s genre is mostly used for artworks that found their source online but in my case this isn’t true. I create scenes, still life paintings in Blender, which later I can connect with my ready made sculpture in physical space. I play with patterns, textures, objects which I actually own and I implement them in the series to juxtapose the two realms.
The origin of Flatlines was a book called Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions (written by Edwin Abbott Abbott), it was a critique for the Victorian era but also explained dimensions very beautifully. In the second dimension lives squares as men and lines as women. Squares (men) have to be careful with lines, all they can see is a point from lines. Squares can never know how long a line (woman) is so they are afraid of them. One day a sphere visited them, the one square who talk with the sphere was ridiculed by others.
I started to create my universe with 3 planes in the focus after our coordinate system 3 axes.
They changed their form in a surreal turn in the series and became towels. This turn can be interpreted many ways but one of them is a form of death.
Every episode has a textual layer as well, which is not describe the pictures but fill with other possible meanings. It has many possible ways to interpret Flatlines’ episodes One itself, which I really like about it. The open interpretation also connects to Adorno’s essays about authentic and artwork’s meanings.
The newest episodes I play with the duality of dream and death. In Greek mythology Hypnos is a god of dreams, a brother of Thanatos, god of death. Hypnos has a cave under a river called Lethe which ‘helps’ to forget.
In this residency I would like to build one of my existing scene in the virtual space and extend my series scope.
