Barena Bianca, Come va lì? Qui…, 2021 (ongoing)
This workshop, related to the field of critical geography, was developed by Barena Bianca through the pandemics to connect kids in Venice to the world, and sympathetic people from abroad to our city. The goal is to overthrow the most common didactic approach to geography in Italian schools, based on the separation of the world in isolated nation states. We are pushing towards a re-thinking process: seeing our planet as a unitary cluster where populations in far corners of it are facing the same struggles. Through the first phase, participants are invited to mail in their contributions to Venice, or send them digitally: envelopes containing words, images and materials connecting this city to the world. The second step will see the kids in Venice studying our issues and selecting places to reach out for, showing the unity of apparently faraway places and people in the wake of climate change and irresponsible development.
All the contributions will be gathered digitally and physically on a map developed with artist Donato Spinelli, that will be browsable (when digital) in order to access all the content, or printable and usable for exhibition purposes or further workshop uses.
The project is developed as part of the international initiative WE ARE OCEAN, developed by ARTPORT_making waves, supported by We Are Here Venice and hosted by TBA21-Academy and Ocean Space, in Venice.
