The Boolean Agars are an ongoing series of sculptures made
of organic and decaying material. Using product design software I create
objects which are referencing a new shape vocabulary currently flooding
our urban everyday life. Mostly seen on sneakers, motorbikes or bicycle
helmets, this specific vocabulary is not based on traditional design values,
like „form follows function“, but on visual spectacle and the extraordinary.
Serving our insaturable need for visual stimulation, those shape combinations
are capable of annoying us as fast as they were able to seduce us
in the first place. I choose to cast those objects in a sea plant-based jelly
made of Agar Agar powder, boiling water and food coloring. What looks
like plastic or silicone, when it comes fresh out of the casting mold, reveals
its true organic nature after a few days. The moisture evaporates, the
sculptures dry out and begin to change their appearance, further emphasizing
their visual expiration date.
