500 Years Later is a short city symphony evocation of present day Mexico City five hundred years after the invasion of the Spanish and the fall of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlán.
It incorporates footage documenting the mass spectacle event of digital video mapping on a reconstruction of the “Templo Mayor” in the main city square of the Zocalo which took place in 2021 to mark the 500th anniversary of the city’s fall to the Spanish conquest and the perseverance of indigenous resistance.
The central spectacle of the temple opens a digital world to the ancient Mexica past while the ruins of the actual temple stand a few hundred meters from the site of the event, prompting questions about the visualization of ancient mythology in relation to national identity.
