Co-creating Commonplace Journal
As collaborators ourselves, we have spent the last four years working over web platforms to create art, write and hold workshops. Working together we have established a practice that explores what we value as a society and how to establish frames to interrogate these values. This approach led us into our first publishing experiment and utilises this naivety to draw upon many voices to create a larger whole.
Commonplace Journal intends to be a conversation between three parties; ourselves, as initiators, creating the framework for the topic, the artists that contribute and the curators who navigate between the framework and the art.
By approaching the entire process as a collaboration we believe that the true value of this project will lay in the process itself. We would like to address this project as co-creation or co-curation. In order to do that we will be directing the process but not the outcome; meaning that we will organise the resources and timeframes while guiding the discussion between artist and curators but not necessarily the outcome.
Beginning this journey, we have started by shortlisting projects based on their affinity to the open call. This meant selecting 8 projects out of 30. In the next step we wish to invite 2-3 curators to collaborate and select 3 projects out of the shortlisted ones. These 3 artists will then discuss with the curators how they wish to proceed, exploring how their work and practices could collaborate. This will then lead to a discussion with ourselves on how to publish, and in which manner we can facilitate their work. This process will require us to then create a publishing concept together, and further on collaborate with the artists on different publishing ideas.
Commonplace Journal: re-imagining alternative realities beyond human-centred realities
Our aim is to co-create a playground of ideas that challenge our notions of every day through writing, imagery and video.
The Anthropocene is defined as the epoch where human impacts shape the geological aspects of the world. This altered landscape has infected our imagination, where our imagination can no longer entertain a world where human actions are restricted for the sake of all species. This lack of imagination is what Commonplace Journal is aiming to tackle, by creating a space where reimagining is possible.
Can we reimagine the world as it is?
Submissions:
We are open to several submission formats:
For written work, the suggested word count is between 500 and 2,500 words for finalised projects. For the purpose of the open call, we ask for an abstract of 200-500 words.
For visual work please send us completed projects or detailed sketches and specify the number of visuals you would like to deliver for the final submission. Please provide this via a Wetranfer link attached to a brief explanation of the work.
Additional to these materials we ask you to send a brief bio (max. 300 characters) and website or related social media links by July 20th, 2021 at the following email address: studio@cerrato-halls.com
We regret to say that we are not able to pay for your contributions at the moment, as this project is self-initiated. We do not support this practice, so we hope to solve this as soon as possible.
The selection for the journal will be done by 3 curators and will base on the relationship of the submissions.
