A mixed-technique depiction of a symbiotic world on the back of a great being.
Supreme is a host life-form of lingering mycorrhizal thought; a projection of the mythic imaginary; at once a looking glass at our present interconnected ontology and a proposition for a radical reimagining of a symbiotic future.
The imagined universe of Supreme is home to a number of different non-human entities which interact with each other and with the world itself. Their worldview consists of a series of myths about the workings of their world.
Through the series of watercolour studies, the project looks at transformation, metamorphosis, and interconnectivity through the behaviour, structure and physiology of imaginary slow-moving non-human life forms. These studies are paralleled by the real-time animated artwork which uses the aesthetics and playful nature of video games as well as AI and neural network technology to open up a world of other-intelligences.
All non-human entities in this virtual universe interact using a animistic neural network system to give them life as an emergent property of the network. The entities have the possibility to join and recombine in different ways to create hybrid creatures – to become shapeshifters. The finished piece will be a virtual living symbiotic ecosystem which can be watched in the form of an infinitely unfolding animated story.
This project is a journey through future animism, slow-thinking, storytelling, shapeshifting and mythic imagination. These themes are intertwined with ecology and extra-human relationships.
For us, this promotes a kind of non-human-centric thinking that we feel is vitally important when approaching our relationships with the world around us today.
A bit about us:
Our collaborative practice is based on ideas of storytelling and play, myth and non-human intelligences – these themes mesh with ideas of ecology in our evoking of emergent intelligences, as well as notions of belief systems and simulated ecosystems.
We work across a number of mediums from painting and drawing to music and writing, as well as real-time animation. Our practice is playful and collaborative with projects growing from the scattered seeds of shared fascinations of fiction, film, video games, theory and the future.
We are scavengers of virtual worlds.
