The three artworks proposed are part of a collection of digital postcards created for the first episode of the SUNSET AI WORLD anthology project, depicting the city of Venice – evacuated due to rising water levels – in the year 2030.
As it happens for all other assets in the SUNSET project, these works were created in collaboration with Artificial Intelligence through a workflow – developed by my team and I – that involves the combined use of the Stable Diffusion’s deep learning system and traditional editing software.
The aesthetics of the artwork are inspired by the painting traditions of artists such as Canaletto, Giovanni Bellini, and Giambattista Tiepolo, who have created an iconic imagery of the city of Venice through their art. Our goal, with the use of various prompts, was to re-contextualize this imagery in an immersive way, bringing it into a possible future where humanity will have to face the consequences of climate change.
It is precisely the silence of the city, now almost completely uninhabited, that we wanted to emerge through the works.
As witnessed by the fictional character Sebastiao Lasilvas, a writer created for this episode of SUNSET:
“[…] The only sound that broke the eerie silence was the gentle lapping of water against the crumbling buildings. The once-bustling city was now a ghost town. The only sign of life was the occasional flicker of a lone candle in a window, signaling the presence of a holdout determined to stay in their home. The water was a inky black that absorb all light. The canals, once the lifeblood of the city, were now silent, with no gondolas or boats to break the surface. As I reached the edge of the city, I turned back for one last look. The water was still rising, slowly.”
