Shifting value of art, Alla Melenteva 2020
Alla Melenteva is a Russian-Ukrainian writer, essayist, critic and interdisciplinary artist living in Kiev, Ukraine.
While browsing Deviant Art, I noticed that I gave preference to paintings and drawings over photos. Unlike photos, the most perfect of which are objectively impartial, a picture made by an artist has the added value in the form of a glimmer of the human spirit.
When people are tired of artificial environment imposed on them they tend to model their own virtual reality, using technologies which not only help make a transition from the as-is state toward the as-could-be phase, but also visually fix on the transition itself.
This is the paradox of bringing in technologies in the process of creativity: they trace and identify the added value in the art effort, blessedly broadening the scope of art on the one hand, but implicitly shifting the terminal value from a solid object of art to the illusive process of art creation on the other.
