In modern livestock farming, each individual is subservient to the system. This applies most strongly to pigs and chickens, which in case of illness are not even treated, but are written off as a cost item. In the livestock industry, the animal is a self-replicating thing that you can chop up and sell.
But anyone who interacts with animals one-on-one, knows that they each have a personality. In my drawings I changed each pig into an individual with whom we can identify. I subtly morphed their eyes and mouth, using the eyes and mouth of young and old, famous and infamous people. For numbering each family member I chose an antique system, which is still common in some places. For centuries, notches have been cut into the ears of piglets with pliers, in English 'ear notching'. The right ear shows the number of the litter and the left shows the number within the family.
