Dividing existence into layers
This series of works deals with the question about the relationship of language and visual arts, whether visual arts can be distanced from the restrictions of linguistic interpretations. The works were originally meant to be some kind of visualized data of my oil paintings, maps of color and space. They represent the universe as I understand it: the different layers illustrated through different colors or forms, or colored forms. The series consists of different ways of representation, individual types of cartographic depictions. One type is where the layers are shown separately, either one below the other or in a more chaotic order, shuffled and colliding with each other. Another depiction is where all the layers are compressed and presented as a single surface or sliding into each other. The space in-between the layers can be observed in the works belonging into the third group, where layers are shown in perspective.
Maps have been an important tool for human knowledge and understanding but they are not an accurate representation of the complicated nature of space. The well-defined borders shown on maps do not illustrate the true nature of this kind of areas. That is why I chose to slice up space and show it as separate layers. My works are eventually cross-sections of space as I understand it.
