This sculpture hangs from chains, mimicking a living creature, looking for another object to grab onto. This is my newest freestanding form. I wanted to create something extraordinary, at the same time completely abstract but evoking a living creature, maybe a squid or an octopus. I'm fascinated with the Freudian concept of das Unheimliche – when what we know turns out to be uncanny in a very particular way.
Deep-Sea Abstractions are my third series of sculptures – all of them are in some way or another cooperating with human bodies. First, I made 'Horns' series of papier-mache sculptures that can be worn on the head or hands. Those sculptures have a bone-like texture. Then I started to make trinkets – little sculptures, from different materials, with a more artificial look than Horns. They have a wet glossy finish and can be worn on the face or hair. Deep-Sea Abstractions are more independent, can stand on their own, but also can be handled by a model or a viewer.
