“He would see faces in movies, on T.V., in magazines, and in books.
He thought that some of these faces might be right for him.
And […] That he might, by force of will, cause his face to approach those of his ideal.”
– David Byrne sings 40 years ago on the Talking Heads song “Seen and Not Seen”, a quote that might be more relevant now than ever: we are getting increasingly immersed in a virtual world that is generated by a range of diverse media and social-media platforms.
We are able create a selfportrait through the content we share online, seemingly transporting our most private self. However, the content often is meticulously curated and staged in order to generate an alternate reality, an alter-ego of ourselves for our followers to experience. Animalistic instincts stimulate us to increasingly define and optimize our online- and public persona. A blurred, estranged composite self(portrait) emerges out of the discrepancy between our optimized public- and our neglected private-self – one that we might loose grasp of.
