Open Call:

What does protest look like? How can it be shaped? How does resistance draw attention to itself today? Can new intercultural symbols and distinctive key visuals be found for the burning issues of our time? For the upcoming exhibition on protest and resistance, the Museum Ulm is looking with this Open Call for merchandising-suitable designs and statements for an accompanying action.
On the occasion of the 100th birthday of Otl Aicher, one of the most influential communication designers of the 20th century, the Museum Ulm is planning a project that will focus on the design of resistance and protest in international contemporary culture. In a central exhibition, selected artistic works and series of works, poster and photo campaigns, illuminated and display panels, billboards and other media with a call-to-arms character will be presented in a contemporary historical context. In parallel, with this Open Call we are looking for further creative expressions of outrage, contradiction and opposition in words and images that will be presented as merch products in the exhibition. Submit your statements, signs, gestures and signals on topics such as democracy, peace and human rights, diversity, health, consumption, economy and ecology.
Whether you are an activist, an opinion leader or simply a convinced person: Show us how you would like to express your opinion, conviction or philosophy on textiles and merchandise of all kinds, on T-shirts, hoodies or caps, bags, towels, stickers or other items.
During the Open Call, discussions will take place in digital meetups and chat rooms. The final selection will be made in early October in a physical meeting at Museum Ulm by a panel of museum curators and pre-appointed, local/regional swarm curators in equal numbers (call for applications will be made shortly on Museum Ulm’s social media).
The selected designs will be produced in consultation with the submitters (type, number, compensation) and shown as part of the exhibition at the Museum Ulm.
Note: Submissions that violate applicable law with regard to discrimination will be rejected. The Museum Ulm also reserves the right not to activate inflammatory or unethical contributions. The Berlin Code of Conduct applies to the previous.nextmuseum.io community.

Curatorial statement
Merchandising items, t-shirts, caps, scarves, buttons, stickers, etc., can be of great importance in spreading protest messages and building movements. What liking or sharing is on social media, it works IRL (in real life) through quickly identifiable signs. Design and product are crucial for successful distribution. The final selection, made by swarm curators, shows what moves you today: war and peace, social justice, racism, digital overkill, consumer critique, crises and discontent. The ten selected submissions will now, together with the artists, be produced as merchandising items for the exhibition and can be seen from November, 11 2022 in the exhibition "Protest gestalten/ Designing Protest" in the Museum Ulm.
