Fertilizers have a bad reputation: they smell and pollute the environment. But we can’t do without them either. If we did without fertilizers, half the world’s population would simply have nothing to eat. Reason enough to take a closer look at this elixir of life.

The exhibition spans an arc beginning in the 19th century with the boom in Guano, then touching on almost every continent before finally ending in Bangladesh: Here, an attempt was being made to create a true circular economy with people whose excreta are processed into fertilizer.

We devote ourselves to “super-phosphate”, artificial fertilizer, explosives, ammunition, compost and manure – showing facts and sketching utopias that hopefully can soon be lived!

The show is flanked by contemporary art, which, for example, juxtaposes the settings of nature and laboratory or brings the surprising beauty of chemicals into the exhibition space, for example. What might that look like? What sounds might this art make? Smells? Haptics? We are eager to hear your contributions as we seek to juxtapose sober natural science with a vital art language!

We are interested in both two and three dimensional submissions as well as video works. Our 4 – 5 finalists will not only receive an artist fee, but also the opportunity to provide our poster motif. We would like to make the final selection of the artistic positions in dialogue with the community – meaning you! – in other words, stay tuned …

The exhibition “Elixir of life. Fertilizer between magic power and explosive” will be on view Oct, 26 2023 – April, 4 2024 at Museum Brot und Kunst – Forum Welternährung in Ulm, Germany.
