The digital arts open up endless possibilities to create new worlds in the past, present or future. They empower us to question the world we actually live in, not only on an aesthetic, but also on a political and social scale. How are we living in our post-digital society? In what relationship do digital, biological and cultural systems, virtual and physical spaces, settleness and globalisation, but also one’s own experiences and community narratives relate to each other?

In the context of this post-digital dilemma, we are looking for works that explore the emergence of new worlds. Above all, we are looking for exceptional works that embody an ethic of slow consumption and invite us to unwind. Using a variety of media (VR, AR, algorithmic art, gaming experiences, as well as videos and mixed-media installations), we aim to stage transmedia storytellings in the exhibition space that, on the one hand, evoke a sense of place and belonging and, on the other, address the multiple
possibilities ( including those arising in the wake of crises) all around us.

The exhibition “Digital Worlds” (09.09.22-15.1.23) at the UZWEI in the Dortmunder U enables to show large-scale installations – from experimental, transdisciplinary art to multisensory, family-friendly artworks with low-threshold access to the thematic complexes. It is to be understood as a portal between different levels of reality, where mythological entities are presented which are the result of today’s power struggles, ancient wisdom and botanical knowledge. A youth advisory board will be established to guide the selection of works and support the curator. In addition, the community will be given the opportunity to influence the selection by making a statement for individual artworks in the comments.

Experimental, playful, interactive: the UZWEI in the Dortmunder U gives
young people space for an artistic approach to film, photography, gaming,
3D and other digital and analogue media in workshops and exhibitions.

Curatorial statement

As a jury, we were thrilled to be able to view more than 90 works submitted to the Open Call and to be able to choose between so many strong submissions representing a diverse range of approaches, forms of expression and media.

As part of the previous.nextmuseum.io project and the concept of open co-curation, there was a Youth Advisory Board with 15 participants from the Wildwuchs Collective. After the initial pre-selection, there was further discussion and voting by the jury and the youth advisory board to first narrow down the eligible entries and then select the seven finalists. It was important for us to present a variety of immersive approaches and works that address the topic together with human and non-human actors and explore forms of togetherness despite differences.
