The exhibition “Death and the Devil” at Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf explores the artistic fascination with the gruesome. The first of its kind, the show illuminates the legacy and continuation of horror’s tropes in fashion, music, film as well as contemporary art.

We are calling for submissions of own designs to be shown within the framework of this exhibition. This can be complete garments or also accessories like bags, hats or shoes. Designs should be completed at the time of submission. While the show examines the importance of Goth culture in contributing to a visual aesthetic associated with the macabre, submissions need not be limited to a “Goth” context. Designs can examine horror’s legacy from a variety of perspectives, such as through key characters and settings. They can be frightening, empowering, whimsical or subversive.

Designs can be submitted in the form of photos, videos and drawings via the Open Call page until 02.04.2023. A preliminary selection of entries will be discussed with a community of experts and the winning design will then be shown in the exhibition in Düsseldorf from 14.9.23-21.1.24. An appropriate fee will be paid for the production as well as the loan of the object throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Exhibition Info

“Death and the Devil” begins with a prologue that illustrates how the history of art and culture has been marked by death and macabre images. This spans from the fantastical demons of the Renaissance admonishing sinful behaviour, to the landscapes of Romanticism steeped in ruin and shadows, to the suspenseful figures lurking in early 20th-century horror films. As part of a “cannibalistic” genre that continually re-enacts its own symbols, characters, and themes, these historical examples serve to contextualize contemporary interpretations of the gruesome and terrifying. In the main body of the show, the exhibition brings together works from the last two decades. The diverse adaptations of horror’s tropes attest to its importance in fashion, music, film, and art.
