Second AR Biennale Düsseldorf

Augmented Reality (AR) is one of the most exciting current forms of representation for contemporary artists. With the second AR Biennale, the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf is offering this young art form a prominent platform. Digital sculptures by international artists can be seen throughout the Ehrenhof and Hofgarten in Düsseldorf with the help of an AR app.
In the second edition of the AR Biennale, there will be a thematic focus for the first time with “Hybrid Nature”, which the AR works will deal with.

Hybrid Nature

In times of conflict and ongoing economic and ecological crises, nature has once again become an important place of retreat for people. The fear of excessive demands, dissolution of boundaries and loss promotes the need for places of recreation – places that enable a return to the essential.

In the second edition of the AR Biennale, the focus is on the fusion of nature, people and technology – because this is precisely where the strength of augmented reality lies. The park landscape in the Hofgarten as the central location of the Biennale will once again receive a “digital extension”, which this time will deal with experiences of nature and space that do not yet exist as well as visions of a sustainable future.

For the next AR Biennale (May until October 2023), we are looking for another AR work that designs productive ideas for a shared future of humans, nature and technology. This may involve expanded experiences of nature, ranging from hybrid plant and animal forms, to visual soundscapes in the park, to futuristic organic architectures.

Fact Sheet for the Open Call

– We are looking for Augmented Reality works, which are interactive, on the theme of “Hybrid Nature”
– The submitted works can be finished works on the theme or ideas for site-specific works in the Hofgarten/Ehrenhof in Düsseldorf
– Especially with Augmented Realtiy, the place where the artwork is placed plays an important role. The ideas for site-specific works should therefore deal with nature, plants and possibly also the history of the Ehrenhof/Hofgarten and the animal world.
– One AR work will be selected from the open call, which will then be shown together with the other positions in the AR Biennale app.
– The AR work must be completed by the end of the year and a fee will be provided.

Technical Rider:

Data package
– Data size: As small as possible, maximum 20 MB per artwork.
Resolution: Content displayed together on the screen should not exceed 100,000 vertices if possible.

Integration in the app
– Defined, self-contained data package including all functions of the artwork
– Required functions of the app for displaying the artwork and carrying out the interactions must be coordinated in advance

Data transfer
Import formats: UnityPackage / AssetBundle
Individual 3D models: fbx, .dae (Collada), .3ds, .dxf, and .obj files

External assets and shaders
– Externally licensed assets must be agreed in advance, legally checked and reduced to a minimum.
– Individual shaders and textures must be agreed in advance and handed over.

Development environment
– Unity with the built-in render pipeline (Unity 2021.3.x)
– Not possible: Spark AR -> Access to software only with Facebook account, publication in standard only possible via Facebook / Instagram

Curatorial statement

The Luxembourg artist Filip Markiewicz convinced the curatorial team of the AR Biennale 2023 with his submission "Infinite Modular Tree". His digital sculpture is a new approach to AR art in public space - and adds a living, abstract figure to the Ehrenhof. Infitine Modular Tree shows a tree that is in constant change and thus poses the question of how nature can look in the digital - what distinguishes a digital from a natural tree? How can they connect in augmented reality?
Markiewicz also works as a musician, among other things, and will make his own composition with analogue synthesizers for his contribution, which is reminiscent of organic sounds from nature. His work is thus not only visually but also acoustically exciting and will also invite visitors to interact.

Filip Markiewicz (born 1980, Esch/Alzette, Luxembourg) is a visual artist who works with various media such as drawing, painting, music, video and installation. In his works, high culture and pop culture merge; he deals with the hyper-medialised world and the political, social and economic discourses that accompany it.
